Accelerating the Growth of Businesses Owned by Women of Color

Women of color have been starting businesses at three-to-five times the rate of all businesses for several years, but their businesses are not achieving the same level of success as measured by revenues and employment.

WHY?

In 2007, the Center for Women's Business Research collaborated with Babson College's Center for Women's Leadership on a unique research project to uncover the challenges and barriers that women-of-color entrepreneurs are facing in their attempts to grow their businesses and to identify actions and strategies that are successful in meeting and overcoming these challenges and obstacles. This project is sponsored by leading corporations and associations.

Our goal is to create knowledge-based, hands-on experience and insight that will help all women-of-color entrepreneurs achieve the business success they seek

WHERE ARE WE NOW?

In 2008, the Center held a National Symposium to release the preliminary findings from this research project (see National Symposium.)

A report of these findings is available for purchase, Accelerating the Growth of Businesses Owned by Women of Color: Hidden Biases, Hidden Barriers. CLICK HERE TO PURCHASE

A DVD of the National Symposium is also available for purchase. CLICK HERE TO PURCHASE

In the Accelerating the Growth of Businesses Owned by Women of Color research initiative, we used a methodology called "Participatory Action Research." A fancy way of saying that while we wanted to collect data in this research effort, we also wanted to see change and the participants to take action to overcome the barriers they saw preventing them from growing their businesses.

So it stands to reason that in order to complete our work, we need to get the information, knowledge and insights back out to the very women who can tumble these barriers! We are doing this in a number of ways:

First, you can buy the publications and read what we've learned!

Second, you can participate in two Webinars in 2009 and learn from experts and discuss with women just like you the findings and strategies.

The first Webinar will be held JUNE 9 on Capital and Cash Flow. Our featured speaker will be Founder of Legacy Bank, Margaret Henningsen. NEEDS TO BE A LINK TO MARGARET'S BIO

Third, you can attend, sponsor and/or promote the two Forums which will be held in Dallas and Chicago in September and October 2009. (Stay tuned for details!)
